It was already known that sports and games have a beneficial effect on the overall well-being of people. Research at the Curaçao Soccer Academy has now shown that regular sports training combined with guided homework practice and social skills training have a positive impact on overall behavior, concentration and attitude.
The Curaçao Soccer Academy, started in February 2012, offers young soccer players (aged from 9 to 14 years) a balanced program to develop their talent as best as possible. In addition to developing and improving soccer skills, with the aim of practicing the sport on a professional top level, much attention is given to the pupils doing their homework and social education.
Currently three selection teams (U-10, U-12 and U-14) train four times a week at the Academy, in addition to training and playing matches with their regular clubs. The players are picked up from school, get a wellbalanced meal composed by a dietician, do and study their homework under the guidance of qualified teachers and work on social education before soccer practice starts. That the quality of playing soccer has already increased within the past eighteen months is evident from the U-13 selection becoming the undefeated champion of the fourth Himno y Bandera tournament in Aruba last March.
Several foreign studies have already shown that practicing sports has a positive effect on the concentration and the intrinsic motivation of the young athlete – not only in sports but also in school. For the Academy it is very important that the school performance of the sporting talents is not adversely affected by their busy schedule.
To gain more insight in how things stand and also to evaluate the program, that has run for almost eighteen months now, the Curaçao Soccer Academy has had research carried out to see to what extent the program of the Academy affects the school performance of its soccer talents. The research that took 16 weeks, sought an answer to the question What is the influence of the Curaçao Soccer Academy on the school results of the children since they have started training at the Academy? and was conducted by Tim Beuckens and Johan Brouwer and was commissioned by Curaçao Soccer Academy and Hogeschool Inholland in Haarlem, the Netherlands. After a thorough desk research, a research method (including interviews with school principals and / or teachers, behavioral diagrams and comparing school grades) was designed to test whether the school results, motivation, concentration and social skills of 52 Academy pupils have changed in the past year.
The results of the research done by Beuckens and Brouwer has now shown that since the children have started participating in the Academy program, their motivation and concentration at school have significantly improved. Their behavior and socio-emotional development (courtesy, cooperation / play) show a noticeable change in the positive sense. All these improvements translate into a demonstrable progress in school results over the past year.
The conclusion of the report and answer to the research question therefore is: the Curaçao Soccer Academy has a positive impact on the educational outcomes of children who are members of the Academy.
The Curaçao Soccer Academy says it feels empowered by this outcome and encouraged to continue on the chosen path. The Academy also hopes that this program may serve as an example for other parties dedicated to further sports development for young people on Curaçao.
